First of all, thanks to anyone who has a solution for me, this problem is driving me nuts.Yesterday, seemingly without warning, I stopped being able to access reddit.com from my browser (firefox - fully updated). When I attempt to travel to reddit, I get this error:'The connection was resetThe connection to the server was reset while the page was loading. The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments. If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection. If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.' Every third or fourth refresh will yield me a formatting-free version of reddit, where it's basically just unformatted text with no pictures, but any attempt to navigate the site sends me back to the connection was reset error. The first thing I did was try other websites from firefox.

They all worked fine. The next thing I did was clear my cache and cookies (and history and everything else). Did not help. The next thing I did was try in internet explorer. No dice, same error.Next, I rebooted my computer. Didn't help. Then, I reset my router, but that didn't fix it. I live with roommates, they can all access reddit, so it's isolated to my computer. (I can even access it on my phone and tablet)I think the problem has to be greater than the browser level, but lower than the router level.I can ping reddit, and I ran a traceroute to reddit and both were fine. Vk without phone number. I also flushed my DNS.Then, I used a proxy and could access reddit fine, but I still can't access it without a proxy.I ran a trend micro house call scan for malware but it found absolutely nothing.

My Java and Flash are fully updated.Anyone have any ideas? Thanks so much.OS: Windows 8.1, 64 bit.The only AV software I am running is Windows Defender and I've tried disabling it, but it didn't help. Check your DNS settings. Do you have static DNS servers set in either the computer or the router, or are they set to automatically obtain their DNS settings?

If either is set for static DNS, try changing the DNS server to 8.8.8.8 and see if that resolves the issue (that address is Google's public DNS server). Also, check the hosts file on your computer and make sure there isn't an entry for reddit. Go to C:WindowsSystem32Driversetchosts and open it in Notepad. If there is an entry there for reddit, edit the hosts file to remove it. You can do this by right-clicking the Notepad icon and select Run as administrator, then navigate to the hosts file in Notepad and open it. Once that's done, right-click the hosts file icon, select Properties, and make it a read-only file if it isn't already. Check your DNS settings. Just out of curiosity, if it were a hosts problem, would I be able to navigate to the site using a proxy? That's pretty cool to know.

The problem could be with your ISP's DNS servers. Try going into the router and statically setting them to Google's.You could edit the hosts file so reddit.com resolves to the proxy's IP address, but it's recommended to leave the hosts file alone. Hosts files are a bit of a relic, dating back to the earliest days of computer networking. Editing them can make troubleshooting in future more difficult. Unless you have a compelling reason to do so, always choose DNS over the hosts file. Thanks again for helping.I know how to access my router's settings, and when I'm in, if I go to status, I can see what DNS IPV4 1, 2, and 3 are set to, but I'm not sure where to change them. Also, if it were a problem with my ISP, wouldn't you expect to see the problem apply to all computers in my household?Edited by Jordan-AR, 25 January 2015 - 01:55 PM.
